A safety recall occurs when a manufacturer or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) finds that a condition or defect that could affect the safety or operation of a vehicle may exist in a specific vehicle or series of vehicles. The manufacturer notifies its authorized dealers, repair facilities, and the registered vehicle owners of the condition or defect so that the registered owners can take the vehicle to the authorized dealer or repair facility for diagnosis and repair.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is an agency within the United States Department of Transportation that carries out vehicle safety programs. Part of NHTSA’s work is to establish and enforce safety performance standards for vehicles and vehicle equipment and to investigate vehicle safety defects.
Some of our used cars may have unrepaired safety recalls on them. There are several reasons for this, but at the core is the fact that the current recall system is based on the manufacturer’s relationship with its dealers, repair facilities, and registered vehicle owners, and not with independent dealers, like Mike Murphy Ford. Recalls are required to be repaired by manufacturer-authorized repair facilities and manufacturers, besides Ford, have not authorized Mike Murphy Ford to complete safety recall repairs and close out repaired recalls. Before you purchase a used car from us, our sales team will review a CarFax report and results from the NHTSA Recall Look-Up with you. Mike Murphy Ford urges customers prior to purchase to have any unrepaired safety recalls fixed by the manufacturer immediately.
Because recalls are required to be repaired by manufacturer-authorized repair facilities, Mike Murphy Ford can only fix recalls on Ford Models, however we are more than happy to assist you with getting your other manufacturer models to the right authorized facility.
