Most brake problems announce themselves. A persistent squeal or a grinding noise, a pedal that feels soft or travels farther than it used to, a pull to one side under braking, or a shudder through the pedal or steering wheel all warrant an inspection rather than a wait-and-see.
Do not ignore a warning light, and pay attention to the parking brake and brake fluid as well. If the pads wear past their friction material, the damage moves to the rotors and a routine job becomes an expensive one.

Weight matters too, so clearing out what you are not using helps, and if you tow, expect a shorter pad life and inspect more often. Hybrid owners often see longer pad life because regenerative braking does some of the slowing, though the pads still need the same inspections.
